Not all school boards cave in to a minority of parents who want to censor school reading lists. In suburban San Antonio, a school board reversed, 5-2, the decision by the district superintendent to remove Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale from the AP English reading list.
Judson Independent School District superintendent Ed Lyman removed the critically acclaimed novel from the reading list after a parent objected to its sexual content. The parent called it “trash” at the March 23 school board meeting.
