JISHOU, HUNAN — A high school cheerleading coach has lost her job after students and parents found her nude photos on the Playboy.com website.
Carlie Christine Beck (or Becker — news sources can’t seem to get her name straight), 20, (left) appeared on Playboy.com back in February, about the same time she was hired to coach the cheerleading squad at Casa Roble Fundamental High School (a public school) in Orangevale, California.
Bad timing, I’d say. Apparently, Beck did the Playboy.com shoot before taking the coaching job, and she says she was upfront about her modeling career.
Nothing much came of her nude modeling until she cut some girls from the squad for having unexcused absences. The offended girls and their parents then presented the bare facts (sorry, I couldn’t resist) to the high school principal.
She then lost her coaching job. The whistle-blowers (or tattle tales) deny they were taking revenge for the cuts, of course. “This is something that I would have brought to the attention of the principal whether she was on the team or not, as a parent,” Heather Geniella, a cheerleader’s mother, told News10 in Sacramento.
Uh-huh.
Every cloud has a silver lining, though. The publicity surrounding her dismissal has given her a lot more exposure (no pun intended this time), ensuring a successful modeling career — and 15 minutes of fame — for Beck.
The petite Beck was Cyber Girl of the Week at Playboy.com during the second week of February, and has also done bikini modeling elsewhere, judging from her page at Model Mayhem, a model promotion site.
Pending Beck’s almost-guaranteed appearance on some talk show or another, here’s my guess at the chronology of events.
College girl needs work. Being an attractive young woman with cheerleader experience, she decides to cash in on her skills and physical attributes. She applies for a coaching job at Casa Roble and also poses nude for Playboy.com during her spring break. Modeling pays OK, but Playboy pays better, and is good for her portfolio. Whether she worried if the Playboy and HS coaching gigs were perhaps incompatible is anyone’s guess. Whether the school was listening to her when she told them about the modeling gig is anyone’s guess.
All goes well until she cuts some girls from the squad. According to the rumors flying in the blogosphere, the girls got vindictive and they and/or their parents found Becker’s nude photos on the Internet and sent them to the school principal.
Shock and awe ensue.
Like the Tericka Dye fiasco, Beck’s nude modeling raises the never-ending question of “teachers as role models.” In Dye’s case, she did some porno movie a decade before becoming a science teacher in western Kentucky, and (one supposes) hoped that her sketchy past would never surface. When it did, the popular teacher’s supervisors refused to renew her teaching contract, despite support from her students and their parents.
By comparison, Beck’s poses for Playboy.com are tame. She shows her breasts and her bare behind — and an impressive tattoo on her lower back — in some of the shots. Beck is alone. She’s not performing any sex acts, or inserting foreign objects in bodily orifices. I mean, she’s pretty, but nude photos are just so ho-hum.
You can of course argue that a coach or teacher posing for Playboy does not provide a suitable role model for teenage girls (except for the ones who are already sending nude photos of themselves to their friends’ cell phones). Girls should aspire to more than being just eye-candy for horny males.
On the other hand, she broke no laws. Maybe she offended some parents’ sensibilities, but it’s hard to say whether her modeling gigs would interfere with her coaching.
Losing her coaching job will definitely not hurt her modeling career. One wonders if her decision to pose nude while working for a high school was calculated risk. Playboy pays its print Playmates $25,000; maybe she was banking on being upgraded from web model to print model. Given the media coverage, Beck is bound to end up on Tyra or Oprah sometime soon.
Carlie Christine is either really dumb or really clever. I’m betting clever.
