Summer on the 28th parallel

JISHOU, HUNAN — Forget all my complaints about living in Kenticky’s heat. Mid afternoon temperatures here had been consistently in the mid-90s for the last two weeks. Today the mercury hit 100°F.

It’s hotter elsewhere, like 104°F in Wuhan and Changsha, but after a certain point a few extra degrees is irrelevant. It’s hot and humid, and unlike Kentucky, we don’t get afternoon thunderstorms to provide some relief.

But, you know, I’m not complaining. A quarter century of living in Kentucky prepared me for this kind of weather. And my apartment has air conditioning. So, no worries.

    What is the humidity like?

The weather website says the humidity is 79% right now (8 am). At 3 pm yesterday, it was around 56%. So, kinda sticky.

Hope it stays this way too. Nice for this time of year.

A cold front came thru last night, it was 60F this morning, with low humidity. But that is not typical in eastern Illinois.

Meanwhile, it’s been cooler than usual here in the American midwest. A very pleasant summer, rarely going above 85. I’d express sympathy, but you’re living in China, man! How cool is that?

  • I’m glad I got out of western Hunan a month ago when the mercury only went up to the mid 80s. It is amazing to me the stark differences in climate between Massachusetts and Hunan. It’s comfortably cool and dry here. Everyone wears deodorant and cologne but the weather’s so nice I don’t know why they bother. Hunan, on the other hand, has the opposite problem, as I’m sure you already know. Are you staying in Jishou? I’m trading hot ‘n humid Hunan for Shanghai, a step in the same direction.
