JISHOU, HUNAN — Now Biblical literalism has spilled over into reading the Constitution literally. A religious group called the Faith and Freedom Institute is complaining because President Barack Obama has used the words “freedom of worship” instead of “freedom of religion.”
They sent him a letter. I predict it ends up in the trash. See for yourself:
Dear President Obama:
It is with great concern that we have watched your rhetorical shift in terminology, choosing to use the phrase “freedom of worship” rather than “freedom of religion.” We’ve noted your use of that phrase (“freedom of worship”) at the Ft. Hood memorial service in November of 2009, as well as your utilization of the same during speeches in Japan and China.
While some may deem the words “worship” and “religion” to be synonymous, and thus interchangeable, they are most definitely not! The First Amendment of the United States Constitution uses the word “religion” and states unequivocally that Congress cannot prohibit the “free exercise” of said “religion.” Your use of the word “worship” implies that we have freedom ONLY within the confines of structures set aside for religious expression (i.e. churches, synagogues, etc.). This is not only a gross departure from the original intent of the First Amendment, but is also the first step toward eliminating faith expression in the public marketplace (i.e. display of religious symbols on public land, printing of religious materials for the purpose of evangelizing, public discussion of faith, etc.).
Mr. President, we call on you to retract all past use of this incorrect and misleading phrase, “freedom of worship,” and cease all future use of the same. We also call on you to acknowledge America’s Christian heritage as is clearly evidenced in our Founding Documents and the overwhelming abundance of statements from our Founding Fathers.
Sincerely,
The Faith and Freedom Institute

JISHOU, HUNAN — Things are not looking good for those folks who think President Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the US of A — the birthers.
One such is Army Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin, who refused orders to deploy to Afghanistan until Obama released his “long-form” birth certificate. Instead of reporting to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, to ship out, the decorated flight surgeon reported to his former post at the Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Not such a good idea. The Army takes a dim view of refusing orders. From the Army Times,
Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin is charged with one specification under Article 87, missing movement, and four specifications under Article 92, three specifications of failure to obey a lawful order and one dereliction of duty.
Lakin had posted a video on YouTube declaring that any “reasonable” person would question Obama’s status as a natural-born citizen. And to make his legal defense even more difficult, he wrote a lengthy explanation of his reasons for a site called the American Thinker.
One wonders how carefully they think there.
Predictably, there is a website, safeguardourconstitution.com, quixotically dedicated to raise funds for Lakin’s defense fund. It alleges that teh Evil Obama has unleashed the Army’s lawyers against Lakin to suppress the truth about Obama’s birthplace, rather than the more mundane possibility that disobeying direct orders is a quick path to a court-martial.

JISHOU, HUNAN — Along with Moon landing deniers, the USA is also “blessed” with people called “birthers,” who deny the obvious fact that President Barack Hussein Obama was born a US citizen.
Trying to summarize their arguments is nigh impossible for anyone possessing a logical mind, but basically they believe Obama is either Kenyan or Indonesian, was adopted, attended school under a different name, has dual British/American citizenship, and ultimately does not meet the Constitutional requirement of being a natural-born citizen of the USA.
They call him the “usurper,” among other less savory epithets.
Obama released to the public a copy of his Hawai’i birth certificate, but the birthers still find fault with it, saying it is a “short form,” not a “long form,” has been forged or doctored, or somehow illicit. Insufficient proof, they say.
Birth announcements in the Honolulu newspapers also seem to be unconvincing to the birthers.
Obama’s parents have both died. The doctor who delivered him died last year at age 98. But in all the manufactroversy about Obama’s birthplace, no one seems to refer to this article from the Buffalo (NY) News. Someone on The Daily Kos mentioned it today.
The News interviewed one of Obama’s teachers, who remembers the very day the president was born.
