Upgrade pangs — solved

JISHOU, HUNAN – One thing I hate about upgrading website applications is the tinkering necessary to make everything work again. I started my upgrade of this site 18 hours ago, and finally got things working right again after 16 hours.

My main problems were (a) a slow DSL connection, which would lead to (b) the FTP server/client connection timing out. So, some files were not uploaded in their entirety, despite several attempts using two different FTP clients (gftp and ftpcube for Ubuntu Hardy). FileZilla finally did the trick late last night; it seemed able to handle connection problems without corrupting the files.

Next problem: WordPress plugins. The plugins I have installed seemed to work fine with the public side of Wheat-dogg’s World, but were preventing me from accessing the administration control panel. I would enter my username and password, and come right back to the login screen. It’s the same blockade I encountered when I tried my last upgrade, to 2.6.

After trolling the Internet for a couple of hours this morning, I found any number of solutions, sprinkled among what seems to be hundreds of complaints all centering around the same problem I had. Meanwhile, the WordPress.org moderators were trying to be patient with the complainers, who I have to say were bitching more than specifying exactly what was wrong with their sites.

If you are one of those hundreds, here’s how to fix the admin login loop.

Website maintenance advisory

Wordpress.org is recommending every user upgrade to the latest version, 2.6.2, immediately. So, I am going to give a whirl. My last attempt to upgrade to 2.6 failed, and I reverted to my previous version.

I may also change the theme, since the author of this one no longer seems interested in maintaining it. It’s not fully compatible with newer versions of Wordpress.

There may be a temporary disruption in service. Thank you for your patience.

Wordpress 2.6 upgrade advice — don’t do it!

Wordpress users, beware! Upgrading to the latest version (2.6) may break your admin login. It happened to me.

In the past, I have had no problems updating WP. You upload the files, update the database when prompted, and bingo! you’re up and running. Not this time. I did everything by the book (except forgetting to logout first and deactivate plugins), got the login screen, typed in my username and password, and … came right back to the login screen.

Shades of php-nuke!

Since I use Firefox, it was easy to clear cookies and authenticated sessions, the usual culprits in situations like this one, but to no avail. I changed my password, both by using the official WP method and by changing directly in the database. No go.

I checked the WP support forums, tried a different browser, checked error logs, uploaded all the files again (twice!). Same situation.

So I downloaded version 2.5 PC3, uploaded it to my server space, updated the database, and woof! I’m back in business again.

So, if you’re considering updating your site to 2.6, wait until the WP gurus fix this little problem. Not being able to administer your site is a bit of a handicap.

Buddy, can you spare a dime?
